Having a pool is a luxury, but it can quickly become a hassle when the water turns green. This not only affects the aesthetics but also indicates underlying issues that need to be addressed promptly. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind green pools, how to identify algae growth, and the best methods to treat and prevent it. Whether you’re a new pool owner or a seasoned one, understanding these factors will help you maintain a pristine pool all year round.
Understanding Algae in Pools
Algae are simple plants that thrive in water, particularly in environments that provide warmth, sunlight, and nutrients. In swimming pools, algae growth is a common problem, especially during the warmer months. There are several types of algae that can affect pools, each requiring specific treatments to eliminate.
Types of Pool Algae
Green Algae
Green algae are the most common type found in pools. They float in the water, making it look green and cloudy. This type of algae is often a result of poor filtration and insufficient chlorine levels.
Yellow Algae
Also known as mustard algae, this type adheres to pool walls and other surfaces, creating a yellowish film. It’s more resistant to chlorine than green algae and requires thorough treatment to eradicate.
Black Algae
Black algae are the hardest to remove. They form on pool walls and floors, appearing as dark, stubborn spots. This type has a protective layer that shields it from chlorine, making it necessary to scrub and use specialized treatments.
Causes of Green Pools
Poor Water Circulation
Water circulation is crucial for distributing chemicals evenly throughout the pool. Poor circulation can create dead spots where algae can thrive.
Lack of Proper Sanitization
Sanitizers like chlorine kill algae. When sanitiser levels drop, algae have a chance to grow. Regular testing and maintenance of sanitiser levels are essential.
pH Imbalance
The pH level of your pool water affects the effectiveness of chlorine. If the pH is too high or too low, chlorine won’t work properly, allowing algae to flourish.
High Phosphate Levels
Phosphates serve as a food source for algae. High levels can come from debris, fertilizers, and even some pool chemicals. Keeping phosphate levels low can prevent algae growth.
Weather Conditions
Warm weather and sunlight are ideal conditions for algae growth. Rain can also introduce contaminants that feed algae.
Signs of Algae Infestation
Green Water
A green tint in your pool water is a clear sign of algae. This discolouration can range from light green to dark green, depending on the severity of the infestation.
Slippery Pool Surfaces
If your pool surfaces feel slippery or slimy, it’s likely due to algae. This can make the pool unsafe for swimmers and should be addressed immediately.
Cloudy Water
Algae can make the water cloudy and less transparent. This murkiness is not only unsightly but also indicates that your pool chemistry is off balance.
Preventing Algae Growth
Regular Pool Maintenance
Routine maintenance is key to preventing algae. This includes skimming debris, brushing the pool surfaces, and vacuuming regularly.
Proper Water Circulation
Ensure your pool pump and filter are working correctly and running for an adequate amount of time each day. Good circulation helps keep algae at bay.
Balanced Pool Chemistry
Regularly test your pool water to maintain the right chemical balance. This includes pH, chlorine levels, and alkalinity.
Step-by-Step Guide to Treating Green Pools
Test Pool Water
Start by testing the water to understand the current chemical levels. Use a pool testing kit to check for pH, chlorine, and alkalinity.
Brush the Pool
Brushing the pool walls and floor helps to loosen algae, making it easier to eliminate. Focus on areas with visible algae growth.
Shock the Pool
Shocking the pool involves adding a large dose of chlorine to kill algae. Follow the instructions on the shock treatment product for the best results.
Use Algaecide
After shocking, apply an algaecide to target any remaining algae. Choose a product that is suited for the type of algae in your pool.
Clean the Filter
Algae can clog your pool filter. Clean or backwash the filter to ensure it’s working efficiently.
Vacuum the Pool
Use a pool vacuum to remove dead algae and debris from the bottom of the pool. This helps to clear the water and prevent future growth.
Choosing the Right Algaecide
Copper-Based Algaecide
Effective against most types of algae, copper-based algaecides are popular for their broad-spectrum efficacy. However, they can stain pool surfaces if not used correctly.
Quaternary Ammonium Algaecide
Also known as “quats,” these are non-foaming algaecides suitable for eliminating green and yellow algae. They are gentle on pool surfaces but may require multiple treatments.
Polyquat Algaecide
Polyquat algaecides are non-foaming and effective against a wide range of algae types. They are less likely to cause staining and are ideal for regular maintenance.
Shocking Your Pool: Best Practices
Types of Pool Shock
There are different types of shock treatments, including calcium hypochlorite, sodium di-chlor, and potassium peroxymonosulfate. Choose the one that suits your pool’s needs.
How to Shock the Pool
Dissolve the shock treatment in water before adding it to the pool. Pour it around the perimeter of the pool in the evening to allow it to work overnight.
Safety Precautions
Always wear protective gear when handling pool chemicals. Keep children and pets away from the pool during treatment.
Balancing Pool Chemistry
Ideal pH Levels
The ideal pH range for pool water is between 7.4 and 7.6. Maintaining this range ensures the effectiveness of chlorine and prevents skin irritation.
Maintaining Chlorine Levels
Chlorine levels should be kept between 1 and 3 parts per million (ppm). Regular testing and adjustments are necessary to keep algae at bay.
Managing Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness
Total alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 ppm, while calcium hardness should be between 200 and 400 ppm. These levels help stabilize the pH and prevent scaling.
Maintaining Your Pool Filter
Types of Pool Filters
There are three main types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Each type requires different maintenance procedures.
Cleaning Your Filter
Backwash sand and DE filters regularly. Clean cartridge filters by removing and rinsing them thoroughly.
Replacing Filter Media
Sand and DE filter media need to be replaced periodically. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for replacement intervals.
Using Natural Remedies for Algae Control
Baking Soda
Baking soda can raise the alkalinity of your pool and help control algae. Sprinkle it on affected areas and brush it in.
Vinegar
Vinegar can help lower the pH and kill algae. However, use it sparingly to avoid drastic pH changes.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural oxidizer that can help clear up algae. Add it directly to the pool water following the product instructions.
Regular Pool Inspections
Checking for Early Signs of Algae
Regularly inspect your pool for early signs of algae, such as discoloured water or slimy surfaces. Early detection makes treatment easier.
Inspecting Pool Equipment
Ensure that your pool pump, filter, and other equipment are in good working order. Malfunctioning equipment can lead to poor water circulation and algae growth.
Ensuring Water Circulation
Make sure that the pool water is circulating properly. Adjust the return jets to create a circular flow pattern.
